Coaching Operations

Practices & Supervision

Practices must be organized, purposeful, and fully supervised to ensure athlete safety and program quality.

EXPECTATIONS

  • Coaches must be present before athletes arrive

  • Athletes may not participate without supervision

  • Practice plans should be prepared in advance

    • Each practice plan should be kept for 7 years for legal purposes

  • Facilities must be left secure and clean, better than your team found them

SUPERVISION REMINDERS

  • No unsupervised locker room use

    • At least one coach should be in close proximity to locker rooms during transition times

  • Arrival and dismissal procedures must be followed

    • These are developed by the coaching staff

  • Adjust plans for safety concerns

Travel and Transportation

TRAVEL PROCEDURES ARE IN PLACE TO ENSURE STUDENT SAFETY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

  • The athletic director will schedule dismissal and departure times and complete transportation requests. Times will be determined by after-school logistics, event start time, and the length of trip all while being mindful about protecting in-class time for students. 

EXPECTATIONS

  • Follow district transportation procedures as outlined by transportation director and bus drivers

  • Athletes travel to and from events witht the team unless approved

    • Parents may sign athletes out after games to drive them home using the school district form

      • A paid coach is responsible for the parent sign out sheet to verify compliance 

  • Supervision is required during all travel

    • Coaches must ride the bus unless approved by the Athletic Director

      • Coaches should spread out on the bus and sit in the front, middle, and back to ensure proper supervision

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

  • Contest dismissal, departure, and return times can be found on your team's arbiterlive page

  • Coaches should never transport an athlete in their personal vehicle

  • Coaches should never be in a one-on-one situation with motorpool transportation

  • Report any concerns immediately

Equipment and Inventory

Coaches are responsible for the care, inventory, and proper use of athletic equipment

  • Duty five of the 14-legal duties is the duty to provide safe equipment. This duty states that, "Courts have held athletic supervisors responsible to improve unsafe environments, repair or remove defective equipment or disallow athlete access.

Coach responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate equipment inventory

  • Report damaged or unsafe equipment

  • Ensure proper storage and security

  • Be dilligent about collection and storage of inventory at seasons end

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Budget and Purchasing

Budget Oversight ensures responsible use of district and program funds

Coach responsibilities

  • Follow district purchasing procedures

  • Obtain approval before purchases

  • Stay within assigned budgets

  • Submit required documentation

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

  • Equipment needs should be planned for in advance

  • Donations may be accepted by following GSD Policy and Procedure 6114

  • Fundraising activities, revenues and expenditures must be submitted by June 1 of the current school year

Scheduling and Facilities

Scheduling and facility use must be coordinated to ensure equity and safety

Athletic programs in the Granger School District utilize a variety of shared spaces to execute the overall athletic offering. It is crucial that practice schedules are submitted to the athletics office prior to the start date to ensure the space is reserved.

Coach responsibilities

  • Submit practice schedules to the athletics office prior to your season start date

  • Follow approved schedules and communicated changes

  • Respect shared facilities

  • Report facility concerns immediately

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

  • Shared spaces require flexibility

  • Leave facilities better than you found them

  • Be a collaborative partner when using community facilities

CONTEST SCHEDULES

Coach responsibilities

  • Discuss desired non-conference opponents with the Athletic Director

    • Consider geography, travel time, out of school time, and matched abilities/skillset

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

  • Be in tune with all contest schedules, locations and directions to provide information to families when needed.

  • Be proactive with contest site preparation and maintenance

    • Communicate needs to Athletic Director, Maintenance staff, or community facility director
